In the past, I have used the lessons with the class as a way to reinforce the concept of a fair test, as well as different types of variables. Using the littleBits gives children the opportunity to go deeper into concepts, combining them with engineering, design, and core science. Children can also create products with the littleBits to present their fin dings from enquiries and conclusions as a way to show their understanding. This resource is designed to be used during Reading Workshop and is to be used with The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell. The pack has been designed in alignment with Common Core State Standards for Grade 7 Reading. About the Novel: Feo’s life is extraordinary. Her mother trains domesticated wolves to be able to fend for themselves in the snowy wilderness of Russia, and Feo is following in her footsteps to become a wolf wilder. She loves taking care of the wolves, especially the three who stay at the house because they refuse to leave Feo, even though they’ve already been wilded. But not everyone is enamored with the wolves, or with the fact that Feo and her mother are turning them wild. And when her mother is taken captive, Feo must travel through the cold, harsh woods to save her—and learn from her wolves how to survive. Children will first look at previous Mars Rovers and their jobs before designing, making, and evaluating their own Rovers. This Outcome will allow children to use the Design - Make - Evaluate - Technical Knowledge threads of the 2014 National Curriculum of England’s Design & Technology document. littleBits don’t have to exclusively be used for the Outcome - Lego Robotics (WeDo) and simple circuit kits can also be used. *Updated with new graphics To introduce this Learning Outcome, we took the children outside with different materials to make shadow art. Some were given challenges, and some were left to explore. Children are then exposed to how shadow is moved to create fear in horror films before being challenged to design a movie trailer of their own. We used iMovie’s Trailer option, but the same project could be done with a variety of different software options. At the end, we invited parents in to school and served popcorn as we all watched the horror trailers made by the children in the year group.
